Wikipedia (Star Wars: Rebel Assault) :
Wikipedia (Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 - The Hidden Empire) :
Star Wars™: Rebel Assault
Rebel Forces have won their first battle against the dark side... But the war has only just begun!
As Rookie One, you are thrust into a 3D galaxy far, far away to crush the evil Empire, once and for all. Take your T16 Skyhopper on a training run through Beggar's Canyon... Then dodge asteroids and blast TIE fighters in a deep space rumble... tackle a fleet of menacing AT-ATs on the icy tundra of Hoth... and ultimately annihilate Vader and the evil Empire with a kamikaze trench run on the infamous Death Star.
Star Wars™: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire
The story opens in the vicinity of the Dreighton Nebula, where Rookie One is part of a Rebel scouting patrol. He's investigating disappearances of Rebel spacecraft near Dreighton, a region rich with mythology about vanishing spacecraft. Legends of the region go back to the days when early hyperspace travelers lost their bearings and disappeared in the currents, eddies, and storms of the nebula. during the Clone Wars, two opposing combat fleets, at the height of battle, were swallowed up by the Dreighton Nebula, leaving it as the battle's only true victor.
Featuring original, live-action Star Wars footage, Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire hosts a multitude of ground-breaking improvements, including intuitive and challenging arcade game play; fifteen land, sky and space missions; an original Star Wars story; full-Screen high-quality video; four skill levels from easy to hard; a digital John Williams Star Wars soundtrack; and authentic sound effects by Skywalker Sound.
Wikipedia (Star Wars: Rebel Assault):
Star Wars: Rebel Assault is a rail shooter video game developed and published by LucasArts for DOS, Apple Macintosh, Sega CD and 3DO Interactive Multiplayer systems, set in the Star Wars universe. Released in 1993, it is the first CD-ROM-only game to be published by LucasArts. The game's story focuses on a young pilot called Rookie One as he is trained by, and subsequently fights for, the Rebel Alliance in the Galactic Civil War.
Summary
The game features digitized footage and music from the original movies (although most of the original footage is replaced by CGI rendered sequences), and full speech. Rebel Assault is one of the oldest titles to make use of extensive full motion video (FMV) on the PC.[citation needed] The video was used to display pre-rendered 3D graphics that were far ahead of what a contemporary PC could render in real-time. Developers pre-rendered various environments and battles and the player flew through these environments.
The gameplay consists of four mission types: three spaceflight types, and one on foot. The three spaceflight mission types are third person, overhead view, and first person. In all three types, the ship generally follows the same cursor which aims its gunfire. If the player moves the targeting cursor after firing, the shots that were already fired will follow the cursor. 9 of the 15 levels are first person, which has movement more restricted than in other modes. As such, enemy fire cannot be dodged in this mode; instead, the player must shoot the enemy within a set time frame in order to avoid taking damage, much like in a light gun game. Only level 9 falls into the on foot mission type. This level puts the player in a series of three stationary settings, though the player character can be maneuvered horizontally in order to avoid enemy fire. In a few stages, there are branching points, much like those in Panzer Dragoon II. Bonus points are awarded for accuracy and whether secondary objectives are accomplished.
In some cases, original footage was filmed for the game with actors, and a Star Destroyer model was digitized (a mini camera 'flew' around it) for a certain mission. Most of the graphics were prerendered in 3D.
Story
The game follows the adventures of a young pilot known as Rookie One, a farmer from Tatooine in the style of Luke Skywalker. The game largely takes place during the events of Episode IV: A New Hope; however, the sequences on Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back are included.
The game begins with Rookie One's training, followed by an attack on the Star Destroyer Devastator, after its capture of the Tantive IV in the events of the film. The rebel squad then defends the Rebel Base on Hoth from the attack shown in the Empire Strikes Back, and finally launches assault on the Death Star, with the player taking the place of Luke Skywalker in destroying the battle station. Each of the 15 chapters features its own brief "alternate ending" clip which plays if the player runs out of lives.
All of the original characters are replaced by new characters and voices, and in some cases, new situations. For example, Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon are replaced by Commander Jake Farrell in an A-Wing who saves "Rookie One" just before he has to take the final shot on the Death Star.
The game was followed by Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire.
Wikipedia (Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 - The Hidden Empire):
Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire is a 1995 video game developed by LucasArts. It is the sequel of the LucasArts action game Star Wars: Rebel Assault, set in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
This part of the series contained mostly original filming with actors and stunts, while the scenery and the space scenes were 3D rendered. According to LucasArts' magazine "The Adventurer", this game was the first media to incorporate live-action actors and footage in the Star Wars universe since Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The stormtrooper armor, weapons, helmets and suits seen to be worn by the actors, were not made for the game, but are the actual props seen in the original trilogy, taken from the archive storage of Lucasfilm.
The game makes use of the INSANE game engine.
Here, the player Rookie One is clearly shown and is a male character. He commands ships not appearing in the previous game, like a YT-1300 Corellian Transport, a B-wing, a Y-wing and encounters new opponents, like TIE Interceptors. The fly videos now seem to move and rotate according to how the player 'moves', so that there is an illusion of 'steering' the ship (which in reality is following a 'rail' in a pre-rendered course).
Plot
After the destruction of the first Death Star, Darth Vader has begun a new project for the Galactic Empire. Meanwhile, in the Rebel Alliance, rumors have grown concerning "ghost ships" attacking Rebel patrols.
Rookie One (acted by Jamison Jones in cut scenes, his voice is provided during the "shoot scenes"), while flying with his wingman, receives a distress call from a YT-1300 transport being attacked by TIE fighters. The pilot has crucial information about the Empire's new project. After fighting TIE Fighters , Rookie One's wingman destroyed by one of the unseen attackers, and Rookie One's ship is shot down, but he is able to eject himself before the rest of his ship explodes and crash lands on the Corellia Star, where the captured transport has been taken. Having survived the crash landing, Rookie One follows a tracking scanner to an Imperial station, where the transport is. After fighting stormtroopers, he finds the transport and its information, but the station's doors close before he can escape, forcing him to go through mining tunnels. He was able to find another way out and escapes through hyperspace.
Back at Pinnacle Base, Admiral Ackbar (digitally copied from Return of The Jedi and inserted into the game) helps the pilots understand the message from the freighter. The Alliance learns that the Empire has constructed a secret mining facility in the asteroid Belt of Arah somewhere in the Dreighton Nebula and a squadron of X-wings moves to destroy it. Along the way, they encounter derillium mines and TIE Interceptors. The facility is not simply mining ore, but is instead supplying rare metals required to manufacture the new V38 "Phantom" TIE, equipped with a cloaking device invented by Grand Admiral Sarn. After opening a way into the facility's core, encountering laser guns, and destroying it, Maarek is killed along with Rookie One's wingman. Rookie One narrowly escapes into hyperspace. Back at Pinnacle Base, Admiral Ackbar comes up with a plan for 2 people to infiltrate the facility building the Phantom P-38s at Imdaar Alpha.
Rookie One takes a crash course in TIE piloting from Admiral Krane with two TIEs stolen from the Empire. Then, they head out to the jump point where they encounter TIE Interceptors. After defeating them, Rookie One heads to Imdaar Alpha alone and encounters laser guns and force fields along the way. He meet with Ru Murleen (played by Julie Eccles). They fly to an Imperial Landing Platform on the far side of the swamp on Swoop Bikes. Disguised as stormtroopers, Rookie One and Ru Murleen (from Rebel Assault) steal a Imperial shuttle and board Admiral Sarn's cloaked Super Star Destroyer. After defeating numerous stormtroopers within the Super Star Destroyer and later in the sewer tunnels, they steal a Phantom TIE from the hangar. After destroying the Super Star Destroyer along with many other Phantom TIEs, Darth Vader kills Admiral Sarn for his failures and escapes on a TIE interceptor. The Imdaar Alpha facility manufacturing the new fighters suddenly appears on Imdaar's moon. After destroying it and returning to a Rebel base, the leader of the Rebels thanks them for saving the day once again. Darth Vader informs the Emperor of what happened and the Phantom TIE at the Rebel Base self-destructs. There are three endings depending on the difficulty.
